August 29

Today in class we reviewed the test.
Your homework is to study the test for your retake on Tuesday.

August 29

Today in class we talked about ions and ionic compounds
To form ions, atoms gain of lose electrons.
Positive ions are cations
Negative ions are anions
If an atom gains electrons it is reduced
If an atom loses electrons it is oxidized
Remember OIL RIG
We talked anout naming ionic compounds:
Cation named first, anion second
We learned how to write formulas

August 21

Hi Class:
Here is the link to today's lecture on precision and accuracy and error.
Vocabulary learned today:

2 types of error: Systematic and random
Instruments are devices used to analyze (measure: balance)
Machine do work (example: hot plate)

We also covered the rules for significant digits.

Your homework was the 2 worksheets.

EXTRA CREDIT POINTS: (10 points)
Create a poster showing the rules for using significant digits. Neatest and artistry matter, s one of the posters will be displayed. Due date Thursday 8/23.

Next class w will learn about dimensional analysis.

August 10

Hi Class,
Here is the PowerPoint presentation from today's lecture.

Remember your homework is a combination of worksheets and book work. The PowerPoint file has pretty good explanations, as does the lecture outline you all have.

August 8

Hi Class
Today you took the safety quiz. Many of you need to retake it. Remember you need to pass it with a 100%.

We learned the names and functions of some lab equipment, and your homework was to study for a quiz on the equipment on Friday.

August 6, 2007

Hi Class,
Today in class we reviewed the safety rules. You will have a quiz on the rules on Wednesday August 8. You must pass with a 100%. If you do not pass it on Wednesday, you must come in on your own time to retake the quiz, prior to performing any lab.

Today's Bell Ringer: Name 5 safe lab behaviors and 5 unsafe lab behaviors.

We review the scientific notation worksheet. If you are having trouble with scientific notation, make an appointment to see me.

After reviewing the lab safety rules I gave you a brief introduction to chemistry: What is chemistry, what are chemicals, why do we study chemistry?

Remember, binders will be collected on Tuesday, August 14 in anticipation of Parent Night.

Your homework, study lab safety rules for test on Wednesday. We will talk about lab equipment on Wednesday after test.

Recitation time will begin on Tuesday of next week.

Welcom Back

Welcome to school students. Hope you had a great summer.
Welcome to your homework blog site. Obviously you all found it OK as you are reading this message.
Today in class you received your syllabus, and we discussed my vision for the class. Remember, keep your textbooks at home for reference.
You all were given a worksheet on scientific notation. This is a critical math component for chemistry, and I felt a good place to start. We will go over it in class on Tuesday.
I hope you all remember your study group members, as these people will not only help you study, but will also be asked to pick up missed assignments for you when you are absent, as well as sources of any missed notes.
We also discussed the format of the class. The first hour will be devoted to new material. The remainder of the class will be a recitation, where you will get into your study groups and discuss the material we just covered, as well as start on homework. This schedule will NOT be followed on lab days. On lab days, the whole period will be devoted to lab.
On Tuesday, the worksheet must be completed, parental letter signed, and binders must be ready. Always bring binders, calculators, and pens to class.

See you next week, have a great weekend.
